Melbourne to Vietnam Flight Time and Arrival Guide

By Mavis · Updated October 25, 2026

The Melbourne to Vietnam flight time is typically around 8 hours 30 minutes to Ho Chi Minh City and 9 hours 30 minutes to Hanoi on a direct flight. Connecting journeys depend on the stopover and onward schedule. These rounded estimates reflect the durations published by Vietnam Airlines; check your booked itinerary for the scheduled duration.

Your entry requirements depend on your passport, not your departure city. This guide covers choosing an arrival airport, preparing your documents and getting from the aircraft to your hotel, including late arrivals and family trips.

How long is the flight from Melbourne to Vietnam?

When comparing an Australia to Vietnam flight time, use the departure city and complete itinerary. A short flight sector can still mean a long journey if the layover is lengthy.

Melbourne and Vietnam time difference

Vietnam uses UTC+7 throughout the year. Melbourne uses UTC+10 during standard time and UTC+11 during daylight saving, making Vietnam 3 or 4 hours behind Melbourne.

Tickets show local times. Use the flight duration on your itinerary rather than subtracting the displayed departure and arrival times.

Should you land in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi?

Choose Tan Son Nhat (SGN) if your trip starts in Ho Chi Minh City or southern Vietnam. Choose Noi Bai (HAN) for Hanoi or northern Vietnam. Landing closer to your first destination avoids an extra domestic connection.

At Hanoi, international flights use Terminal 2, while domestic flights use Terminal 1. Our Noi Bai Airport guide explains the airport layout.

At Ho Chi Minh City, check your onward terminal by airline and flight number, especially if you connect to a domestic flight. See our Tan Son Nhat Airport guide for arrival and terminal information.

What to check before flying to Vietnam from Melbourne

Prepare these essentials before departure:

  • Visa or exemption: Australian passport holders should arrange an appropriate visa or valid exemption documentation before travelling. Do not assume you can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • E-visa details: If applying yourself, use the official Vietnam e-visa portal. Check the approved entry dates, permitted entries and passport details before flying.
  • Document backup: Keep your passport and visa accessible, with a printed visa copy and offline copies of your booking details.
  • Application timing: Apply well before departure so you have time to correct errors or respond to requests for further information.
  • Passport and health requirements: Check current official guidance and your airline’s document requirements close to departure. Smartraveller’s Vietnam advice covers visa preparation and possible health declarations.

Digital Pre-Arrival Form

Vietnam’s Pre-Arrival Information (PAI) system began as a pilot at Tan Son Nhat on 15 April 2026. The Ministry of Public Security’s guidance allows submission within three days before entry and advises saving or printing the resulting QR code.

Before travelling, check the official pre-arrival portal for instructions applicable to your arrival airport. The form does not replace a visa.

Your first 60 minutes after landing

Treat the first hour as an arrival checklist, not a promise that you will reach your car within 60 minutes. Immigration queues, baggage delivery and customs checks vary.

  1. Follow signs to immigration. Have your passport and visa or exemption documentation ready.
  2. Collect checked baggage. Find your flight on the baggage screens and check that you have every suitcase, stroller and other checked item.
  3. Clear customs. Follow the appropriate channel and declare items when required.
  4. Enter the public arrivals hall. This is where most drivers and hotel representatives meet passengers.
  5. Contact your pickup. Use the confirmed meeting instructions before walking outside or moving to another pickup area.

Keep your hotel address and driver’s contact details available offline in case mobile data is not working.

Connecting to a domestic flight

If you arrive internationally and continue on a domestic flight, clear immigration at your first airport in Vietnam.

Before booking the connection, confirm:

  • Whether you must collect and recheck your bags.
  • Whether the onward flight leaves from another terminal.
  • The airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines.
  • What assistance or rebooking applies if the inbound flight is delayed.

Allow time for each step rather than relying only on the gap between flights. Separate tickets can leave you responsible for arranging a replacement flight if you miss the connection, so check the fare conditions carefully.

Landing late at night or early in the morning

For a late-night arrival, confirm late check-in with your hotel and arrange a pickup that accounts for your flight’s arrival time. Save the hotel address, ideally in Vietnamese as well as English, and keep a backup way to contact your driver.

For an early-morning arrival, ask whether the hotel offers early check-in or luggage storage. If you need a room immediately after an overnight flight, consider booking it from the previous night and telling the hotel when you will arrive.

Check the operating hours of any SIM counter, currency exchange desk or airport bus you intend to use.

Travelling as a family or group

Choose one lead traveller

Nominate one person to coordinate with the driver and count passengers and bags before leaving baggage reclaim. Keep the group together while finding the pickup point.

Book a vehicle with enough luggage space

Choose a private airport transfer by passenger count and luggage volume. Include suitcases, strollers and any child seats you need when requesting a vehicle. Confirm child-seat availability before booking.

Our Airport Transfer service can help you arrange a suitable car or van for the group.

Prepare your eSIM before departure

Check that each phone is eSIM-compatible and network-unlocked. Read the plan’s installation and activation instructions before leaving Melbourne, since some plans start their validity when installed and others when connected to a supported network.

See our Vietnam eSIM options to choose connectivity for your trip.

Decide whether Arrival Fast Track would help

Arrival Fast Track provides a welcome at the immigration hall and assistance through the priority passport-control lane. It can be useful when travelling with tired children, older relatives or a group unfamiliar with the airport.

Choose the service scope that fits your needs. Immigration assistance focuses on passport control, while Full Fast Track also includes support with baggage collection and carrying luggage to the exit and transfer area. Neither option guarantees immediate baggage delivery or entry approval.
